| Marking with urine or feces is a form of wolf communication, and wolves mark as often as every few minutes on odors and conspicuous objects in their pack's territory (which can be, according to one source of information, 15 to 40 miles across if they have the room. The dominant male and female in the pack mark more than other individuals, often using the standard dog raised-leg-on-the-fire-hydrant posture. A mark says, "MINE!" and a wolf "reading" a mark can determine (under the right conditions) all kinds of things about the wolf who left the mark, including dominance, age, health... Wolves' noses are so keen, by the way, that if they are downwind of their prey, they can smell it 1 & 1/2 miles away. |
